    About This Course

    This course prepares individuals for a credit-by-exam and is a two semester equivalent course in freshman level English Composition. The course introduces the principles of writing with emphasis on writing process, thesis, content, organization, purpose, and audience. It focuses on writing improvement through the practice of writing and reading. The final exam consists of three essay questions that measure: 1) The students’ ability to compose an argument using written resources and experience to persuade a reader 2) To analyze and respond to literary text. 3) To analyze and critique a written essay.

    Course Objectives

    After completing this course, you will be able to:

    • Demonstrate an awareness of the various forms of writing and the relationship between writer and audience.
    • Compose an extended argument that persuades the reader.
    • Demonstrate techniques of personal narrative, expository, analytical, descriptive, and argument writing modes.
    • Demonstrate various phases of writing: draft, revision, final copy, brainstorming, free writing; outlining, and journalism.
    • Explore sources of writing: reading, thinking, analyzing, and discussion.

  • About Instructor

    Idali Medina
    Idali Medina has worked in the education field for thirty years. She attained a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Puerto Rico and a Masters in Educational Administration from the College of New Jersey. She has taught English from kindergarten through twelfth grades and Education and English courses at the university level. Idali moved to Venezuela in 1985 and started working as an ESOL teacher in private companies, after school programs and for a local university. She was very involved with the TESOL organization and taught ESOL classes to students of over 40 countries. She worked for two international schools in Caracas teaching the children of the diplomatic and expatriate communities living abroad. Both schools are SACS/CASI and AdvancED accredited. In the international schools Idali was promoted to language coordinator, assistant principal and finally principal, until she moved to Florida in 2006, where she worked at a private elementary school in Plantation, Florida as school principal. She served as an accreditation evaluator for the Association of Independent Schools of Florida and AdvancED, visiting schools in the process of acquiring accreditation. Idali is also an active faculty member at Ana G. Mendez University System, a bilingual university in South Florida. Here she teaches Education and English courses, provides faculty professional development and revises curriculum. In addition to Distance Learning Systems™ Idali is employed as the Director of Early Childhood Ministries for Lutheran Ministries in Christ.
