The Secret to College: Credit By Exam

For most scholars, the path to earning credit typically involves several weeks of paying attention to lessons, writing down notes, finishing projects and passing a mid-term and final examination. But if you could generate that credit in less time and at a portion of the cost of getting an official course, would you be interested? There would be no projects to finish and no lessons or classes to attend, just an examination to pass. Students looking for a more efficient model to generate a degree should consider credit by exam programs, which have become well-known among those who want to speed up their pace and save money.

CLEP logoPrior studying evaluation (PLA) is a means by which adults get credit for the experiences they have had while gainfully employed or through military programs. It turns years of sales experience, a company-mandated computer training course, or even a skill mastered eventually into college credit, thus lessening the cash a college student spends on college studying. The fewer classes a college student has to register for, the less cash is needed. From an economic standpoint, a semester’s value of credit adds up after factoring in tuition, books and travel time to campus. In a nation stuck by education and student loan debt, this is an inviting perk to a non-traditional college student looking for a cheaper way to get a degree.

Another major player in PLA is the aforementioned CLEP. This has the potential to give a college student with multiple credit hours. Common College Level Examination Program exams include general education, like the entry-level math programs. For learners who work in a technical field, this could be a quick 3 hours earned. CLEP exams could offer these multilingual adults the opportunity to get all their language requirements. Schools can be finicky when it comes to transferring prior college credits, with many science and math credits stuck with an expiration date. College Level Examination Program Dilemma

CLEP has become quite popular in the home school community. You may be thinking, “What is CLEP?” CLEP is a test created by the College Board to evaluate college degree knowledge of a subject. It’s called the College Level Examination Program. Basically, if your kid knows a subject well enough to successfully pass the test, he can get college credit score for that subject.

If your kid is highly inspired and desperate to engage in an advanced degree that needs a bachelor’s degree as a first step, CLEP examinations can boost your kid’s knowledge. In some cases, your kid can generate his entire degree through the college level examination program. If the college your kid is most interested in participating allows CLEP credit, CLEP can be a great choice, because it’s both cost and time effective. A bright and inspired college student can CLEP a lot of classes in a brief period of time, garnering lots of college credits and saving a ton of money.

college_level_examination_programEarning a bachelor’s degree through the college level examination program is not the best choice for most learners. The school experience offers much more than a degree. Your kid will find like-minded friends, begin long term connections, learn freedom and self-awareness and build networks that will increase his job possibilities. He will most likely have the chance at many exciting and different internships and study overseas programs and will gain knowledge and life skills through the number of possibilities and experiences college life offers. Your kid will skip many of these benefits if he selects to engage in college at home.

One global lament is how challenging it is to socialize after college. An individual’s college buddies are generally real and long term buddies. It is in the exclusive establishing of an excellent university that your kid will understand who he is and what it is he wants to do with his life. This is why I suggest CLEP only for making credits before coming into college or getting a degree if one already has a career in place.

College Level Examination Program News

Though learners are given the opportunity to earn credit before college, some credits might not be transferable to Northwest. The College Level Examination Program provides many different choices for learners to get credit without getting a formal course. Students at Northwest are permitted to take these assessments for certain subjects detailed in the yearly catalog. There are several programs provided that learners can test out of, a few examples being American Government, financial accounting, college algebra and western civilization.

CLEP“In the catalog, there are certain scores we need,” said Tamera Grow, associate director of admissions. “These (in the catalog) are the ones that have been analyzed in the past by our teachers. It reveals the ranking that is required to get the credit for the classes that are here.” There are no specifications learners need to fulfill to take this test. Freshmen through seniors are able to test out of programs using College Level Examination Program. However, though many learners think this program is a simple and fast way to generate credit, some programs detailed in the catalog as having the test-out choice are not approved at all at Northwest.

“If a college student had another (subject), we could have it analyzed,” Grow said. “I think this is a traditional record of what has been done in the past. I have not gone through all College Level Examination Program choices in the last few years to say ‘OK, this is the one that we should do.’ I have just kind of left it up, but if we got a demand, I could look at it.” Each test costs learners $100, said Beth Mason, assessment office administrator. Of that, $80 goes to the CLEP examining company and the other $20 invested on the 90 minute test is kept by Northwest. Students may not have obtained credit for certain subjects at Northwest for a few reasons: They could have not scored well enough for the Northwest specifications, or the individual departments at Northwest may not think the credit is worthy of passing.
